Traditional Vietnamese pig breeds are very fatty and grow slowly. Therefore, they are not suitable for economic development needs. Therefore, at present, Vietnamese people tend to raise imported hybrid pigs, leading to the risk of gradually losing native breeds.

Mong Cai Pigs

Mong Cai pigs originated from Mong Cai city, Quang Ninh province, and are now present in many northern and central provinces and the Central Highlands. Mong Cai pig includes 2 lines: big bones and small bones. [2] Mong Cai pigs have a black head, white triangular or diamond-shaped in the middle of the forehead, and a white snout. The back, buttocks, neck are black in the shape of a saddle, the rest are white. The fertility of Mong Cai pigs is quite high, from 10-16 heads / litter, the weight of newborn piglets is 0.5-0.7 kg / head, and the lean rate is 32-35%.

pot-bellied pig

Piglet is a local breed of pig in the North of Vietnam, nowadays rarely raised due to its low economic efficiency and in danger of extinction. Lard pork breeds (also known as pork belly) have much less fat meat (lean ratio is only 36% while fat accounts for 54%). Pig raising for the whole year is only 40–50 kg, while the breeding pig for six months has reached 70-80 kg. Fat piglets are only raised in a few poor households in Hoang Hoa, Thanh Hoa. They have houses on stilts that are high above the ground so that water does not enter the house when floods come or avoid wild animals, and the lower floor also makes cages for these pigs like animals. Nowadays, the village does not do that anymore, but instead sets up its own barn for a distance away from home to avoid epidemics

Grass pig

Grass pig or dike or armpit pig is a breed of pig indigenous to Vietnam. They are small in volume, thin, impoverished, slow to grow and are the specialty of some poor lands in the Central region, mainly in the former district IV provinces, associated with a period of a poor economy. with poor management during the subsidy period, pigs were raised spontaneously and degenerated due to inbreeding. They are now raised for specialties.

Lung Pu black pig

This is an indigenous breed of pig in Meo Vac, currently being raised in 4 districts in Ha Giang province. [3] Lung Pu black pig is of great stature, raised for 10 to 12 months and weighs 80 to 90 kg. The coat is black, thick and short, the skin is rough, the ears are small, the muzzle is of medium length. On average, there are 10 breasts and an average of 1.5 to 1.6 litters / year. This breed of pig has two types, one has white 4 legs and has white spots on the forehead and muzzle, and the other is jet black. This is the breed of pig with the highest percentage and the best quality compared to other local breeds of Ha Giang. [3]

Pigs of Van Pa

This is the oldest local pig breed of the Van Kieu – Pa Co ethnic minority in 2 mountainous districts of Huong Hoa and Dakrong in Quang Tri province. The weight of mature Van Pa pigs is only 30 – 35 kg. This breed has many wildlife behaviors such as herd, high self-feeding ability, hardship, disease resistance, and delicious meat. [4]

Pig Turtle

This is a native breed of pig in the mountainous Quang Binh province, raised by Khua people in the farmers by the mode of free-grazing and there is no barn. [5] In terms of coat color, Khua pig can have black body hair color, black skin with white spots on 4 legs or black skin with white patches on body. The muzzle is generally long and strong, the back is quite straight.

Pigs of Muong Khuong

As a breed of pig raised in the northern mountainous areas and associated with the H’Mong life, they are a local pig breed for a long time, raised in many areas of Lao Cai province, especially in Muong district. Khuong. This is one of the three precious pig breeds in the Northern provinces, they are also one of the three major domestic pig breeds for economic hybrids in the North of Vietnam. The body is tall, straight back, very voracious, and is more resistant to cold than other pigs. However, the meat was of poor quality; Pigs have few children and are clumsy. Muong Khuong pigs are raised mainly in the Northern midlands.
