Overview of the Veterinary medicine Manufacturing Industry in Vietnam

According to a report by the Southern Rural Development Policy and Strategy Center (SCAP), the total value of our country’s veterinary drug manufacturing industry (vaccines, drugs, chemicals, biological products, etc.) reaches about 3,280 billion dong. Meanwhile, the cost for veterinary drugs in pig farming is about 2,140 billion dong, poultry around 920 billion dong, and cattle 220 billion dong. And in the future, the cost for veterinary drugs is expected to increase significantly due to the growing demand for livestock development.

However, in reality, this trillion-dong market is mainly in the hands of foreign enterprises as the domestic veterinary drug manufacturing industry has not yet met the demand. Specifically, each year we have to import about 2.5 million USD worth of poultry flu vaccines, 16 million USD worth of blue ear pig disease vaccines, and about 10 million USD worth of foot and mouth disease vaccines.

The number of GMP standard veterinary medicine manufacturing plants is still limited

The country has 89 facilities that have been granted GMP certification (Good Manufacturing Practice standards), of which there are 10 veterinary vaccine manufacturing facilities that meet GMP and 2 veterinary vaccine manufacturing facilities that are investing in GMP plants, expected to be completed in 2023. The domestic production of drugs and vaccines meets about 80% of the demand and is also exported to more than 40 countries and territories.

Veterinary drug manufacturing enterprises have 3 laboratories that have been assessed by the Ministry of Health and granted level III biosafety certification (ATSH) (up to the present time, the country has a total of 6 laboratories that have reached ATSH level III, including 3 laboratories of the Health sector).

The demand for vaccines in our country is quite large, but the veterinary drug manufacturing industry needs to apply good GMP practices to be competitive.
